Wixon Valley — Distracted Driver Crashes into Bryan ISD Bus
Posted on Monday, February 18th, 2019 at 6:39 am by Williams Hart
At around 4 p.m. on Friday, February 15, 2019, a car crashed into the back of a Bryan ISD school bus in east Brazos County.
According to initial reports, the driver of the pickup was on his phone, distracted, while he was driving along Texas State Highway 21, between Wixon Valley and Kurten. Because of this, he was not paying attention to the road, thus causing him to rear-end a Bryan ISD school bus that was stopped and was unloading elementary students.
The students inside the bus were uninjured, and the driver of the pickup was unharmed as well.
Investigation is still underway for this particular accident.
It is great to hear that no one was seriously injured in this accident. However, there are countless other victims who are not as lucky. Car accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In a statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to roughly about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
A particular kind of vehicular accident that is fairly common in the United States is a rear-end collision. It has been reported that there are about 1.7 million rear-end collisions in the U.S. every year, and from that number, roughly 1,700 people die while another 500,000 are injured. The National Transportation Safety Bureau (NTSB) also notes that 87% of rear-end collisions happened simply because the driver was not paying attention to the road.
Distracted while driving is actually considered to be one of the most common causes of car accidents. The other two popular causes are DUI (driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol) and speeding.
