Umbarger — Man Dies After Car Gets Struck by Train on U.S. Route 60

Posted on Tuesday, December 31st, 2019 at 10:50 pm by Williams Hart   |  Updated: Wednesday, January 22nd, 2020 at 7:53 pm

Just after 5 a.m. on Monday, December 30, 2019, a man was killed in a car vs. train collision that occurred near Umbarger in Randall County, Texas.

According to initial reports, Carlos Olvera, 21, disregarded a stop sign on FM 168, crossed all lanes of the U.S. Route 60, traveled into a bar ditch, struck a dirt embankment, and then went on to strike a railroad track ballast adjacent to the highway.

The vehicle then rolled over the first set of tracks and came to rest upside down on the second set of tracks. It was then struck by an eastbound train and came to rest about 2000 feet down the tracks from the impact area.

Olvera was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash still remains under investigation.

It is unfortunate to hear of the death of Carlos Olvera. Alas, he is not the only one whose life is taken away by a vehicular accident. Vehicular accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.

An accident involving a train is a particular kind of vehicular accident, and though it is not as common as the other kinds, it can still be quite deadly. The National Transportation Safety Bureau (NTSB) has reported that almost every 2 hours, a person or a vehicle is hit by a train in the United States. A few of the common scenarios in this kind of vehicular accident include derailment, train-train collisions, train-car collisions, train-person collisions, and damage to property.

Additionally, studies have shown that nearly 1,000 people die every year in the U.S. due to a train accident.

Train accidents are undeniably tragic and devastating for the victims and their respective families. They can also be highly complicated.
