On Monday, February 18, 2019, a head-on collision that occurred on Texas State Highway 359, about a mile west of Tynan, killed two people and hospitalized four others.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the driver of an 18-wheeler was driving west on TX-359, and while the truck was moving, it started to dump caliche onto the roadway without the driver’s knowledge. Soon after, a Dodge Ram, driven by a 67-year-old man, traveling west, and a Jeep SUV, driven by 59-year-old Kenneth Durham, traveling east hit the caliche. Both vehicles lost control, and they crashed into each other.
Durham and his front seat passenger, 61-year-old Rhonda Durham, were killed. Two adults and a toddler who were also in the Jeep and the driver of the Dodge Ram were brought to a Corpus Christi hospital.
It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to the victims of this particular accident. Alas, they are not the only ones whose lives are taken away by a car accident. Car accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In a statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
A specific kind of car accident that is incredibly deadly is a head-on collision. The reason why a head-on collision is said to be incredibly deadly is because of the increased force that is sustained by both vehicles. Reports estimate that head-on collisions only comprise 2% of reported crashes, but they account for over 10% of driving fatalities. Some of the common outcomes of a head-on collision are spinal injuries, brain injuries, catastrophic injuries, broken bones, paralysis, and of course death.
