Houston — Driver of Stolen Vehicle Hospitalized After Crashing into Water Barricade on Texas State Highway 288
Posted on Monday, May 13th, 2019 at 8:22 pm
On the afternoon of Monday, May 13, 2019, a police chase ended in a crash, and a driver of the suspect vehicle was hospitalized as a result.
According to initial reports, the police chase began roughly around 3:20 p.m. near Texas State Highway 288 and Reed Road after Houston police received reports of a person who stole a Lexus SUV from the parking lot of a Home Depot. The chase then ended on the South Freeway and Southmore Boulevard after the driver of the stolen vehicle lost control and crashed into the water barricade.
The driver did not sustain any serious injuries, and he was brought to Ben Taub Hospital. He is also facing auto-theft and several other charges.
Investigation is still ongoing.
It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to the unidentified driver. Alas, there are countless other victims who suffered the same fate. Car accidents are a problem in this day and age, and yet, they still continue to happen on a regular basis. In a statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
In addition to this, a police car chase is not uncommon in the United States. In fact, in 2012, about 68,000 vehicle pursuits were reported. It is also common for police chases to end in death or injury. The Bureau of Justice Statistics reported that from 1996 to 2015, an average of 355 people were killed every year in pursuit-related accidents. A third of the number consist of innocent bystanders, and a USA Today investigation has noted that chases kill black people — both as innocent bystanders and as the target of the pursuit — 3 times more than anybody else.
