A bicyclist is in critical condition after he was struck by a suspected drunk driver at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Monday, April 1, 2019, in San Antonio, Texas.
According to initial reports, Tito Bradshaw, 35, was traveling in his bicycle eastbound on East Houston Street when in the 1900 block, he was struck from behind by Linda Collier Mason, 67. Bradshaw was then thrown backward into the windshield of the car and suffered massive head injuries. He was brought to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition.
Mason told the police that she saw Bradshaw because of the flashing light on his bicycle, but she still failed to avoid hitting him. She was then booked on charges of intoxication assault and driving while intoxicated.
It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to Tito Bradshaw. However, he is not the only one who is affected by a vehicular accident. Vehicular accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In a statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
An accident involving a bicycle is a particular kind of vehicular accident, and it is one that is more common than anyone is inclined to think. In fact, the NHTSA reports that roughly 677 people died and about 38,000 were injured in bicycle crashes in 2011. However, since bicycle riders are not required to register their bicycles or get a license, the number of fatalities and injuries may actually be bigger. Additionally, about 90% of all bicycle injuries are never officially reported by police agencies. Because of this, the exact percentage of bicycle accidents, fatalities and injuries because of bicycle accidents will be difficult to determine.
Vehicular accidents, especially bicycle accidents, are quite difficult to the victims and their respective families.
