Just before 10 p.m. on Monday, July 22, 2019, a man and a woman were injured in a hit-and-run accident that occurred on the Northeast Side of San Antonio, Texas.
According to initial reports, the man and the woman, both believed to be in their 20s, were riding together on Gawain Drive, not far from Ray Bon Drive and Midcrown Drive, when in the 5200 block, they were struck by a station wagon. After the crash, the driver of the station wagon fled on foot.
Both the man and the woman were brought to University Hospital for their injuries.
Once located, the driver of the vehicle may face a charge of failing to stop and render aid.
An investigation is still ongoing for this accident.
It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to the victims in this accident. Alas, there are countless other victims who suffered the same fate. Vehicular accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
Motorcycle accidents, a type of vehicular accident, are common despite the fact that motorcycles are initially believed to be far less crashworthy than closed vehicles. In 2016, the NHTSA reported that 5,286 people died in motorcycle accidents. In the same year as well, it is reported that motorcyclists were 28 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a crash per vehicle mile traveled.
Additionally, another particular kind of vehicular accident that is quite common and deadly is a hit-and-run. According to a study done by roadside-assistance giant AAA, there were 2,049 hit-and-run deaths that occurred in 2016. This number is the highest annual total on record, and in the decade leading up to that number, 682,000 hit-and-run crashes happened each year.
