San Antonio — Man Dies After Dump Truck Crashes into Building on Interstate 10

At around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, September 17, 2019, a man was killed in a single-vehicle accident that occurred on the East Side of San Antonio, Texas.
According to initial reports, Clay Lindsey was driving a dump truck eastbound on Interstate 10 when in the 4200 block, a tire blew out. As a result, the vehicle veered off the freeway and cross the access road, striking two parked vehicles and a building.
Firefighters found Lindsey severely pinned inside the truck. It took rescuers an extended amount of time to extract him. Once he was freed, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash still remains under investigation.
It is unfortunate to hear of the death of Clay Lindsey. Alas, there are countless other victims who suffered the same fate. Car accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In fact, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) reported that in 2016, there were 266 cases of this kind of crash in Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam counties. This is an increase from the numbers in 2014 (255) and 2015 (240).
Rob Reiter and Mark Wright also reported in another statistics that of the crashes into buildings that happened between 2014 and 2017 that they gathered, 24% of those were retail stores, 23% commercial buildings, 19% restaurants, and the remainder comprised of convenience stores, offices, and other non-residential buildings. Additionally, they said that the leading causes for these crashes are operator and pedal errors; they account for 30% and 25% of these crashes respectively. An operator error is when the driver accelerated too much or was speeding or was in the wrong gear. Pedal error, on the other hand, is when the driver made the mistake of stepping on the gas pedal instead of the brake.
