A man was killed and another person was injured in an ATV accident that occurred in Rio Grande, Texas on Saturday, February 1, 2020.
According to initial reports, Wilburn Hicks, 43, was driving an ATV near Country Estates and Rio Vista when all of a sudden, the ATV rolled over. Hicks was promptly pronounced dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, another person suffered minor injuries during the accident.
The crash still remains under investigation.
It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to the victims in this accident. Alas, there are countless other victims who suffered the same fate. Vehicular accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are small, single- or dual-person vehicles that are used for recreational purposes on off-road courses or areas of wider land. They are not legal to be used on the streets in the United States, but people still do use them, and so accidents involving this kind of vehicle happen. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, ATVs were responsible for 125,500 injuries and 621 deaths in 2003. The number of injuries rose to 146,000 in 2006 and to 150,900 in 2007.
Statistics also show that one-third of all ATV-related fatalities reported and recorded between 1982 and 2002 were riders under the age of 16.
Vehicular accidents, especially those involving ATVs, are quite difficult for the victims and their respective families.
