On Monday, January 28, 2019, a fatal accident occurred just outside of Perryton, Texas that killed two individuals and injured two others.
According to reports, Martha Guzman, 55, was traveling north on State Highway 70 at approximately 4 p.m. when she crossed over to the southbound lane and crashed into another vehicle that was heading south. Guzman was pronounced dead at the scene.
All the individuals inside the second vehicle were from Florence, Alabama. The driver, 50-year-old Danny Motley, was critically injured, but thankfully, he was later pronounced to be in stable condition in Ochiltree General Hospital. Jason Burbank, a 33-year-old passenger, was also in critical condition while another passenger, 29-year-old Hank Casteel, unfortunately died in Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital.
It is unfortunate to hear of the deaths of Martha Guzman and Hank Casteel and the injuries of Danny Motley and Jason Burbank. Sadly, they are not the first ones who are affected by a car accident. Car accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In a statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
A particular kind of car accident that is incredibly deadly is a head-on collision. The reason why a head-on collision is said to be incredibly deadly is because of the increased force that is sustained by both vehicles. Reports estimate that head-on collisions only comprise 2% of reported crashes, but they account for over 10% of driving fatalities. Some of the common outcomes of a head-on collision are spinal injuries, brain injuries, catastrophic injuries, broken bones, paralysis, and of course death.
