At around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, a man was killed in a two-vehicle crash that happened on Texas State Highway 36, about 3.5 miles south of Milano.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), Louis Smith, a 77-year-old resident of Caldwell, was driving his 2006 Dodge pickup southbound on SH 36 when he slowed down and moved to its right onto the improved shoulder. Meanwhile, Carlos Gonzalez, a 26-year-old from Miami, Florida, was driving his 2002 Kenworth truck-tractor, semi-trailer southbound as well, toward the location of the Dodge. Smith then turned left in front of the Kenworth, and as a result, the Kenworth struck the driver side of the Dodge.
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene while his passenger, 46-year-old Louis Smith Jr., was brought to CHI St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital with incapacitating injuries. Gonzalez, on the other hand, was uninjured.
It is unfortunate to hear of the death of Louis Smith. Alas, he is not the only one whose life is taken away by a vehicular accident. Vehicular accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In a statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
Additionally, an accident involving a tractor-trailer is another kind of vehicular accident, and it is a deadly one just because of the fact that a tractor-trailer is one of the largest and most dangerous vehicles in the world. It is estimated that there are more than 2 million tractor-trailers roaming in the United States, and each year, they get involved in about 500,000 accidents. And since the size of a tractor-trailer is enormous, the results of this kind of accident are catastrophic, from a severe injury to death.
Vehicular accidents, especially those involving trucks, are quite difficult to the victims and their respective families.
