At approximately 9:30 a.m. on Friday, August 2, 2019, a driver was killed in a train collision that occurred in Guadalupe County, Texas.
According to initial reports, a pickup truck was traveling along FM 78, just east of Marion, when it crossed the tracks and failed to yield to the train in the 1000 block. The train sounded its horn, but the truck driver did not acknowledge it. As a result, the train struck the pickup, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash still remains under investigation.
It is unfortunate to hear of the death of the unidentified driver. Alas, there are countless other victims who suffered the same fate. Vehicular accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
Moreover, an accident involving a train is another particular kind of vehicular accident, and though it is not as common as the other kinds, it can still be quite deadly. The National Transportation Safety Bureau has reported that almost every 2 hours, a person or a vehicle is hit by a train in the United States. A few of the common scenarios in this kind of vehicular accident include derailment, train-train collisions, train-car collisions, train-person collisions, and damage to property.
Additionally, studies have shown that nearly 1,000 people die every year in the U.S. due to a train accident.
Vehicular accidents, particularly the train ones, are undeniably devastating to the victims and their respective families. They can also be complicated.
