At approximately 9:20 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2019, two teenage girls were killed in a hit-and-run accident that occurred in Kyle, Texas.
According to police reports, a pickup truck and a sedan were traveling on the Interstate 35 access road when all of a sudden, the pickup struck the sedan. There were five people inside the sedan, and two of them — a 16-year-old girl and an 18-year-old girl — were pronounced dead at the scene. The other three were brought to the hospital.
The driver of the pickup truck, 61-year-old Macario M. Hernandez, fled from the scene on foot. However, he was eventually found and has been charged with two counts of an accident causing death and three counts of an accident causing serious bodily injury.
An investigation is still ongoing for this accident.
It is unfortunate to hear of the deaths of the two young women. Alas, they are not the only ones whose lives are taken away by a car accident. Car accidents are a problem in this day and age, and yet, they still continue to happen on a regular basis. In statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
A particular kind of vehicular accident that is quite common and deadly is a hit-and-run. According to a study done by roadside-assistance giant AAA, there were 2,049 hit-and-run deaths that occurred in 2016. This number is the highest annual total on record, and in the decade leading up to that number, 682,000 hit-and-run crashes happened each year.
