A 21-year-old man was dead after a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred on Stagecoach Road in Killeen, Texas at around 12:15 a.m. on Wednesday, February 6, 2019.
According to initial reports, a patrol officer was driving north on W.S. Young Drive when he spotted a black motorcycle driven by 21-year-old Caden Michael Shunk going south on the same road commit a traffic violation. The officer then attempted to pull over the motorcycle, but Shunk just turned on to Stagecoach Road and sped away. For a while the officer lost sight of the motorcycle but later managed to locate it in a nearby parking lot of the 1300 block of Stagecoach Road where the motorcycle and Shunk were both in the road.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Shunk failed to navigate the curve while traveling west on the road, and as a result, he collided into a wall, causing him to be thrown off from the motorcycle and hit a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is unfortunate to hear of the death of Caden Michael Shunk. Alas, he is not the first victim whose life is taken away by a vehicular accident. Vehicular accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In a statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
Motorcycle accidents, a type of vehicular accident, are common despite the fact that motorcycles are initially believed to be far less crashworthy than closed vehicles. In 2016, the NHTSA reported that 5,286 people died in motorcycle accidents. In the same year as well, it is reported that motorcyclists were 28 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a crash per vehicle mile traveled.
Vehicular accidents, especially those involving motorcycles, are quite difficult to the victims and their respective families.
