Keene — 2 People Killed, Several Others Injured in Head-On Collision on FM 2280

Just before 9:30 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2019, two people were killed and several others were injured in a head-on collision that occurred near Keene, Texas.

According to initial reports, a white Chevrolet Silverado was traveling southbound on FM 2280, about two miles north of Keene, behind another vehicle. For an unknown reason, the Silverado attempted to pass the vehicle in front, and while in a no-passing zone, it entered the northbound lane and struck a 2005 Ford Expedition head-on.

Two passengers inside the Ford, 35-year-old Amparo Juarez and 50-year-old Sixto Martinez, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Ford, 39-year-old Roberto Martinez, was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. Also transported from the Ford were 45-year-old Maria Guadalupe Martinez, 19-year-old Maria Martinez, as well as two females ages 15 and 3. All were transported to Fort Worth hospitals to be treated for various injuries.

A passenger in the Silverado, 44-year-old Leonardo Hernandez, was transported to John Peter Smith Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Silverado, 21-year-old Ramiro Davila, left the scene of the accident and has yet to be located.

The crash still remains under investigation.

It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to the victims in this accident. Alas, there are countless other victims who suffered the same fate. Car accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.

A specific kind of car accident that is incredibly deadly is a head-on collision. The reason why a head-on collision is said to be incredibly deadly is because of the increased force that is sustained by both vehicles. Reports estimate that head-on collisions only comprise 2% of reported crashes, but they account for over 10% of driving fatalities. Some of the common outcomes of a head-on collision are spinal injuries, brain injuries, catastrophic injuries, broken bones, paralysis, and of course death.

Car accidents, especially head-on collisions, are quite difficult for the victims and their respective families.
