On Friday, January 25, 2019, one child was dead and another was critically injured after a car crash that occurred in West Harris County, in the Katy area.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 9:30 in the evening, Jose Chavez was traveling eastbound on Morton Ranch Road with his wife, Bernice Chavez, and their three children. He then turned left onto Elrod Road, but then he was struck by a Chevrolet Camaro driven by Rafael Quiroz.
One child was taken to Texas Children’s Hospital Katy in critical condition, but unfortunately, he died soon after. Another child was ejected from the car and was flown by LifeFlight to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center in critical condition. The third child only sustained minor injury, and she and her parents were brought to Memorial Hermann where they were reported to be in stable condition.
Quiroz was not injured, and though deputies believed that alcohol was not involved in the crash, Quiroz was speeding over the limit of 45 mph. Additionally, Chavez had not properly restrained his children in the car, and as a result, he may face charges for that.
It is unfortunate to hear about the death of the young child. Alas, he is not the first victim whose life is taken away by a car accident. Car accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In a statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
