Irving — 1 Worker Dead, 2 Others Injured After Construction Accident on North Wildwood Drive

Posted on Wednesday, October 9th, 2019 at 8:47 pm by Williams Hart

At around 1 p.m. on Friday, October 4, 2019, a worker was killed and two others were injured in a construction accident that occurred in Irving, Texas.

According to initial reports, the accident occurred at a building under construction on the Frito Lay property at 701 North Wildwood Drive. Two ladders collided, causing three men to fall as far as 30 feet.

One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene while the other two were injured and hospitalized at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. One of the survivors is in critical condition while the third man has serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.

All men involved are in their 30s and are employees of Walker Engineering, the contractor hired to build the facility.

The crash still remains under investigation.

It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to the victims in this accident. Alas, there are countless other victims who suffered the same fate. Workplace accidents are relatively common in the United States. According to statistics, 5,147 workers were killed on the job in 2017 in the country (3.5 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers). This can be interpreted as more than 99 deaths a week or more than 14 deaths every day.

In addition to this, there were 4,674 worker fatalities in private industry in the calendar year 2017, with 971 from that number (or 20.7%) being in construction. In other words, one in five worker deaths in 2017 was in construction. The leading causes of private sector deaths in the construction industry — which are referred to as the “Fatal Four” — are falls, struck by an object, electrocution, and caught-in/between. These “Fatal Four” were responsible for about 59.9% of the construction worker deaths in 2017.

Workplace accidents are undeniably terrible for the victims and their respective families.
