Houston — Woman Killed in Motorcycle Accident on Texas State Highway 288

Posted on Monday, August 26th, 2019 at 9:27 pm by Williams Hart

At around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2019, a woman was killed in a motorcycle accident that occurred in Houston, Texas.

According to initial reports, the 31-year-old woman was a passenger on a Harley Davidson motorcycle that was traveling eastbound on Holcombe Boulevard. The motorcycle had the green light at the intersection of Texas State Highway 288 service road, but it was struck by a black Chevrolet Tahoe that ran the red light while traveling northbound on the service road.

The female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The operator of the motorcycle was uninjured and remained at the scene. Meanwhile, the driver of the Tahoe fled the scene.

The crash still remains under investigation.

It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to the female victim in this accident. Alas, there are countless other victims who suffered the same fate. Vehicular accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.

Motorcycle accidents, a type of vehicular accident, are common despite the fact that motorcycles are initially believed to be far less crashworthy than closed vehicles. In 2016, the NHTSA reported that 5,286 people died in motorcycle accidents. In the same year as well, it is reported that motorcyclists were 28 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a crash per vehicle mile traveled.

Additionally, another particular kind of vehicular accident that is quite common and deadly is a hit-and-run. According to a study done by roadside-assistance giant AAA, there were 2,049 hit-and-run deaths that occurred in 2016. This number is the highest annual total on record, and in the decade leading up to that number, 682,000 hit-and-run crashes happened each year.

Vehicular accidents, especially motorcycle accidents and hit-and-run accidents, are quite difficult for the victims and their respective families.
