Houston — Woman Dead, 2 Others Injured in Auto-Pedestrian Accident on North Freeway

Posted on Monday, August 26th, 2019 at 9:38 pm by Williams Hart

At around 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2019, a woman was killed and two other victims were injured in an auto-pedestrian accident that occurred in Houston, Texas.

According to initial reports, Lawrence W. Franklin, 41, was driving a gray BMW 740 westbound on the North Loop 610 and exited to the entrance ramp to the North Freeway when he struck a blue Jeep Cherokee disabled on the shoulder of the entrance ramp. The BMW failed to stay in a single lane and struck three of five pedestrians who were standing in a grassy area away from the disabled vehicle.

The female victim was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where she was pronounced dead. One male victim, 16, and another female, 3, were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Lawrence remained at the scene and was determined to be impaired and was subsequently charged for his role in the crash.

The crash still remains under investigation.

It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to the victims in this accident. Alas, there are countless other victims who suffered the same fate. Car accidents are a problem in this day and age, and yet, they still continue to happen on a regular basis. In statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.

Car accidents are reported to be deadly for pedestrians particularly. The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) estimates that the number of pedestrian deaths in the U.S. is 6,000 in 2017. This is a 27% increase from 2007 to 2016, and it is said that the number in 2017 is a 25-year high.

Additionally, there are five states that had the most number of pedestrian fatalities in 2017, and these are California, Florida, New York, Arizona, and Texas. These states accounted for about 43% of pedestrian fatalities during the first half of 2017 despite the fact that they are home to only 30% of the U.S. population. The GHSA also claims that children and the elderly are the most vulnerable to this kind of accident.

Car accidents, especially the auto-pedestrian ones, are quite difficult for the victims and their respective families.
