At approximately 2:45 a.m. on Sunday, August 11, 2019, a woman sustained minor injuries in a train vs. car collision that occurred in Houston, Texas.
According to initial reports, a man was driving an SUV along Roy Street, and he attempted to drive around the train crossing arms in the 1300 block. As a result, the SUV was struck and pushed by the train for about a block before coming to rest near the 1300 block of Durham Drive.
The man was uninjured in this crash, but the woman reported pain and was treated at the scene.
The driver was cited for failing to yield the right of way of the train.
The crash still remains under investigation.
It is great to hear that no one was seriously injured in this accident. Alas, there are countless other victims who are not as lucky. Vehicular accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
Moreover, an accident involving a train is another particular kind of vehicular accident, and though it is not as common as the other kinds, it can still be quite deadly. The National Transportation Safety Bureau has reported that almost every 2 hours, a person or a vehicle is hit by a train in the United States. A few of the common scenarios in this kind of vehicular accident include derailment, train-train collisions, train-car collisions, train-person collisions, and damage to property.
Additionally, studies have shown that nearly 1,000 people die every year in the U.S. due to a train accident.
Vehicular accidents, particularly the train ones, are undeniably devastating to the victims and their respective families. They can also be complicated.
