Houston — Teen Seriously Injured After Car Surfing on Kilwinning Drive

Posted on Sunday, March 17th, 2019 at 10:20 pm by Williams Hart

At around 6:45 p.m. on Friday, March 15, 2019, a teenager suffered serious injuries after he was car surfing on the hood of the vehicle and he fell off in northwest Harris County.

According to Harris County deputies, the teen was car surfing with a friend along Kilwinning Drive when in the 16000 block, he fell off and his friend who was driving the car ran him over. The teen then got pinned underneath the vehicle.

He was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Medical Center with serious injuries.

It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to the unidentified teenager. Alas, he is not the only one who is affected by a car accident. Car accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In a statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.

Additionally, car surfing is a relatively new phenomenon that can result to accidents. Car surfing is described as a thrill-seeking activity that involves riding on the exterior of a moving motor vehicle while it is being driven by another person. Injuries and other lethal consequences are highly possible when someone does car surfing, even at low vehicle speeds, because accidents are more often than not caused by unanticipated movements of the vehicle, such as swerving or braking.

Statistics show that most car-surfing-related accidents in the United States happen in the Midwest and the South (75%) and that most people who are injured are males (15%) and in the age range of 15 to 19 years old (69%).

Car accidents, especially the car-surfing-related ones, are quite difficult to the victims and their respective families.
