On the evening of Saturday, July 20, 2019, a man was killed in a DUI hit-and-run accident that occurred in Houston, Texas.
According to initial reports, the man was driving a blue Honda Accord northbound on Lee Road when in the intersection of Edward Drive, his vehicle was struck by a tan Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, driven by 29-year-old Gabriala Sebastian-Lucas. The driver was eventually pronounced dead.
Sebastian-Lucas and her male passenger fled the scene on foot. Soon after, Sebastian-Lucas was brought into custody, and she was determined to be impaired. She is now charged with intoxication manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid.
An investigation is still ongoing for this accident.
It is unfortunate to hear of the death of the unidentified man. Alas, there are countless other victims who suffered the same fate. Car accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
The three common causes of car accidents are speeding, driving while distracted, and DUI (driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol). DUI, in particular, is quite appalling. The NHTSA reports that about 28 people die every day because of drunken driving crashes, and in 2010, 10,228 died in DUI accidents while about 345,000 were injured. All these numbers paint a terrible picture indeed.
Additionally, another particular kind of vehicular accident that is quite common and deadly is a hit-and-run. According to a study done by roadside-assistance giant AAA, there were 2,049 hit-and-run deaths that occurred in 2016. This number is the highest annual total on record, and in the decade leading up to that number, 682,000 hit-and-run crashes happened each year.
Car accidents, especially the DUI and hit-and-run ones, are quite difficult for the victims and their respective families.
