Houston — Man Dies After Head-On Collision on Bammel North Houston Road

At approximately 7:45 p.m. on Sunday, February 2, 2020, a man was killed in an alleged drunken head-on collision that occurred in Houston, Texas.
According to initial reports, Jeffery Davis, a suspected drunken driver, was traveling along Bammel North Houston Road when he attempted to make a left turn onto Champion Forest Drive. He had a flashing yellow turn signal on as he made his way into the intersection.
Meanwhile, a black pickup truck, which had the right of way, drove through the intersection. As a result, Davis’ vehicle slammed into the black pickup truck head-on.
The driver of the black pickup truck, Eduardo Tovias, was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, Davis was taken to a nearby hospital.
Davis is now facing a charge of felony murder after the collision.
The crash still remains under investigation.
It is unfortunate to hear of the death of Eduardo Tovias. Alas, there are countless other victims who suffered the same fate. Car accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
There are three common causes of car accidents, and these are speeding, driving while distracted, and DUI (driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol). DUI, in particular, is quite appalling. The NHTSA reports that about 28 people die every day because of drunken driving crashes, and in 2010, 10,228 people died in DUI accidents while about 345,000 were injured. All these numbers paint a terrible picture indeed.
Moreover, another specific kind of car accident that is incredibly deadly is a head-on collision. The reason why a head-on collision is said to be incredibly deadly is because of the increased force that is sustained by both vehicles. Reports estimate that head-on collisions only comprise 2% of reported crashes, but they account for over 10% of driving fatalities. Some of the common outcomes of a head-on collision are spinal injuries, brain injuries, catastrophic injuries, broken bones, paralysis, and of course death.
Car accidents, especially the DUI ones and head-on collisions, are quite difficult for the victims and their respective families.
