A fatal crash that happened at the 8500 block of West Loop South (also known as West Interstate Highway 610 South) at approximately 1:50 a.m. on Sunday, January 20, 2019 left two people dead.
According to the Houston Police Department, a white Lexus GS 300 was disabled in a northbound moving lane of traffic after it was struck from behind by a silver Ford Taurus. The collision caused the Lexus to veer to the left where it was struck by a black Ford F-150 pickup. The Lexus then crashed into a concrete barrier while the Ford F-150 struck another vehicle that was parked in the emergency lane of the freeway.
The male driver of the Lexus was pronounced dead at the scene. The female passenger in the Lexus was brought to Memorial Hermann Hospital, but unfortunately, she later died there.
The driver of the Ford F-150, 27-year-old Jacob Austin Emery, was found to be intoxicated, and as a result, he was charged with driving while intoxicated.
It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to the victims of this particular accident. Alas, they are not the only ones whose lives are taken away by a car accident. Car accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In a statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
The three common causes of car accidents are speeding, driving while distracted, and DUI (driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol). DUI, in particular, is quite appalling. The NHTSA reports that about 28 people die every day because of drunk-driving crashes, and in 2010, 10,228 died in DUI accidents while about 345,000 were injured. All these numbers paint a terrible picture indeed.
Car accidents, especially the DUI ones, are quite difficult to the victims and their respective families. Thankfully, there are lawyers that specialize in car accidents/DUI accidents, so if you are a victim of this kind of accident, or you know someone who is, or you lost a loved one because of this, then please never hesitate to ask for help from these lawyers.
