At approximately 7:50 a.m. on Friday, April 26, 2019, a child sustained injuries after he was struck by a vehicle in Houston, Texas.
According to initial reports, a first-grade boy was on a scooter, together with his fifth-grade brother, when he darted into traffic near Torry Pines Road and Reseda Drive. As a result, the child was hit by a vehicle.
The child sustained a cut on his head and an injury to his shoulder, but aside from that, he is expected to recover.
Investigation is still ongoing for this accident.
It is great to hear that the child will recover from this accident. Unfortunately, he is not the only one whose life is affected away by a car accident. Car accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In a statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be roughly about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
Additionally, accidents that involve electric scooters are slowly becoming more prominent nowadays. According to a recent study by Portland’s Bureau of Transportation, the e-scooter injury rate has been revealed to be 2.2 accidents per 10,000 miles — a number that is much higher than the national average for motorbikes (0.05 per 10,000 miles) and cars (0.1 per 10,000 miles). However, the study did note that not all of those incidents were related to rental e-scooters, so it is possible that the average is lower in reality.
That said, e-scooter accidents still happen, and they can be incredibly deadly. An investigation by Consumer Reports has revealed that there have been at least 1,545 accidents involving electric scooters that happened in the U.S. over the past year. And in Austin, Texas alone, 4 fatalities and 53 injuries have been reported since last May 2018.
