Highlands — Child Killed, Father Critically Injured in 18-Wheeler Accident on East Freeway

At approximately 7 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22, 2019, a child was killed, and her father was critically injured after they got involved in an 18-wheeler accident that occurred in the Highlands, Texas.

According to preliminary investigations, an 18-wheeler and a sedan were traveling westbound on East Freeway when all of a sudden, a car in front of the 18-wheeler abruptly stopped and the big rig swerved to avoid it, but it struck the sedan instead. The impact of this collision caused the sedan to go over the guardrail and land below the freeway.

There were three people inside the sedan: 35-year-old Jorge Alejandro Bonilla, who was the driver, 24-year-old Carmen Madrid, and Bonilla’s 4-year-old daughter. Bonilla was trapped in the vehicle, and once he was extricated, he was flown to a hospital in critical condition. Madrid was uninjured, but the young girl was already pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the 18-wheeler stayed on the scene, and an investigation is still ongoing for this accident.

It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to the victims in this accident. Alas, they are not the only ones who are affected by a vehicular accident. Vehicular accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.

Additionally, an accident involving a tractor-trailer is a kind of vehicular accident, and it is a deadly one just because of the fact that a tractor-trailer is one of the largest and most dangerous vehicles in the world. It is estimated that there are more than 2 million tractor-trailers roaming in the United States, and each year, they get involved in about 500,000 accidents. And since the size of a tractor-trailer is enormous, the results of this kind of accident are catastrophic, from a severe injury to death.

Vehicular accidents, especially those involving trucks, are quite difficult for the victims and their respective families. Thankfully, there are lawyers that specialize in truck accidents, so if you are a victim of this kind of accident, or you know someone who is, or you lost a loved one because of this, then please never hesitate to ask for help from these lawyers.
