On the evening of Saturday, August 31, 2019, a drowning accident occurred in Haltom City, Texas, and it claimed the lives of two young sisters.
According to initial reports, the two young girls, ages 5 and 7, were found unresponsive in a pool in the apartment complex located in the 5300 block of Springlake Parkway. Once they were pulled out of the pool, they were brought to a Fort Worth hospital where they were later pronounced dead.
This accident still remains under investigation.
It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to the two young girls in this accident. Alas, there are countless other victims who suffered the same fate. Drowning accidents like this are relatively common, not just in the United States but also all over the world. According to both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is a major public health problem all over the world. They reported that about 360,000 people died from drowning in 2015.
Even just in the U.S. alone, the statistics for drowning fatalities are alarming. From 2005-2014, it was reported that there was an average of 3,536 fatal unintentional drownings annually in the country. That is about ten deaths every day. Additionally, about 332 people died every year from drowning in a boating-related accident, and about 1 in 5 people who die from drowning in the U.S. are children 14 years old and younger. And for every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries.
Moreover, statistics have shown that nearly 80% of people who die from drowning are male while children ages 1-4 have the highest drowning rates. The fatal unintentional drowning rate for African Americans was also significantly higher than that of Caucasians between 1999-2010.
