At approximately 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, an Amtrak train hit and killed a man in Haltom City.
According to Haltom City Fire Marshal Fred Napp, Michael “Doc” Thompson, a 49-year-old former host with Glenn Beck’s online talk show lineup, was walking or jogging along the tracks of Trinity Railway Express, just east of Carson Street before Big Fossil Creek. Witnesses and the train engineer claimed that the man was not on the tracks, but rather he was just jogging close enough for the train to hit him.
Thompson ultimately died because of this accident.
It is unfortunate to hear of the death of the unnamed pedestrian. Alas, he is not the first one whose life is taken away by a vehicular accident. Vehicular accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In a statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
An accident involving a train is a particular kind of vehicular accident, and though it is not as common as the other kinds, it can still be quite deadly. The National Transportation Safety Bureau has reported that almost every 2 hours, a person or a vehicle is hit by a train in the United States. A few of the common scenarios in this kind of vehicular accident include derailment, train-train collisions, train-car collisions, train-person collisions, and damage to property.
Additionally, studies have shown that nearly 1,000 people die every year in the U.S. due to a train accident.
Train accidents are undeniably tragic and devastating to the victims and their respective families. They can also be highly complicated.
