At approximately 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, May 2, 2019, a multi-vehicle collision occurred in Garland, Texas.
According to initial reports, a school bus, an 18-wheeler, and several other vehicles collided into each other near the intersection of North 1st Street and East Walnut Street, not far from Garland High School. This collision caused the bus to flip over to its side.
There are no reports yet with regards to any injury. However, Garland Police did say that there were no children inside the bus at the time of the accident.
An investigation is still ongoing for this accident.
It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to the vehicles in this accident. Alas, there are countless other victims who suffered the same fate. Vehicular accidents are a problem in this day and age, and yet, they still continue to happen on a regular basis. In statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
An accident involving a bus is a particular kind of vehicular accident, and it is fairly common even though buses are often deemed as a safe mode of transportation. According to the NHTSA, between 2000 and 2007, there have been 1,093 fatal bus accidents, and from this number, about 1,315 people died, and 3,471 were injured. In other words, about 137 bus-crash-related fatalities occur every year.
Additionally, an accident involving a tractor-trailer is another kind of vehicular accident, and it is a deadly one just because of the fact that a tractor-trailer is one of the largest and most dangerous vehicles in the world. It is estimated that there are more than 2 million tractor-trailers roaming in the United States, and each year, they get involved in about 500,000 accidents. And since the size of a tractor-trailer is enormous, the results of this kind of accident are catastrophic, from a severe injury to death.
