At around 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2019, one person was killed and four others were injured in a DUI accident that occurred in Fort Worth, Texas.
According to initial reports, two vehicles initially crashed at Mitchell Boulevard and South Beach Street. The driver of one of the vehicles then tried to leave the scene and struck a third vehicle, killing a passenger.
The victim was identified as Sharon Haley, 61. Four other people were taken to hospitals with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The driver who caused the collision, identified as 36-year-old Juan Fernando Gonzalez Medina, was later determined to be intoxicated. As a result, he was arrested and charged with intoxicated manslaughter with a vehicle or driving under the influence.
The crash still remains under investigation.
It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to the victims in this accident. Alas, there are countless other victims who suffered the same fate. Car accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
There are three common causes of car accidents, and these are speeding, driving while distracted, and DUI (driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol). DUI, in particular, is quite appalling. The NHTSA reports that about 28 people die every day because of drunken driving crashes, and in 2010, 10,228 people died in DUI accidents while about 345,000 were injured. All these numbers paint a terrible picture indeed.
Car accidents, especially DUI ones, are quite difficult for the victims and their respective families. Thankfully, there are lawyers that specialize in car accidents/DUI accidents, so if you are a victim of this kind of accident, or you know someone who is, or you lost a loved one because of this, then please never hesitate to ask for help from these lawyers.
