On Sunday, May 12, 2019, a bicyclist was hospitalized after he was struck by a vehicle in Elmendorf, Texas.
According to initial reports, the bicyclist was traveling in the 7500 block of FM 327. He had his headphones on, and as a result, he wasn’t able to hear the driver of a vehicle behind him repeatedly honking. The bicyclist was then weaving on the roadway, first moving to the shoulder of the road then abruptly going back into the road. The driver tried to honk one last time, but she was unable to avoid him and struck him with her vehicle.
The bicyclist was then brought to a San Antonio hospital in an unknown condition.
This crash still remains under investigation.
It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to the unidentified bicyclist. Alas, he is not the only one who is injured by a vehicular accident. Vehicular accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In a statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
An accident involving a bicycle is a particular kind of vehicular accident, and it is one that is more common than anyone is inclined to think. In fact, the NHTSA reports that roughly 677 people died and about 38,000 were injured in bicycle crashes in 2011. However, since bicycle riders are not required to register their bicycles or get a license, the number of fatalities and injuries may actually be bigger. Additionally, about 90% of all bicycle injuries are never officially reported by police agencies. Because of this, the exact percentage of bicycle accidents, fatalities and injuries because of bicycle accidents will be difficult to determine.
Vehicular accidents, especially bicycle accidents, are quite difficult to the victims and their respective families.
