At around 7:15 p.m. on Monday, July 22, 2019, a man was killed in a bicycle vs. train collision that occurred in Denton, Texas.
According to initial reports, Joseph Whelen, 53, was traveling on his bicycle along Brinker Road when in the 2300 block, he was struck by an oncoming train. Whelen was then brought to Medical City Denton, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead.
The crash still remains under investigation.
It is unfortunate to hear of the death of Joseph Whelen. Alas, there are countless other victims who suffered the same fate. An accident involving a train is a particular kind of vehicular accident, and though it is not as common as the other kinds, it can still be quite deadly. The National Transportation Safety Bureau has reported that almost every 2 hours, a person or a vehicle is hit by a train in the United States. A few of the common scenarios in this kind of vehicular accident include derailment, train-train collisions, train-car collisions, train-person collisions, and damage to property.
Studies have shown that nearly 1,000 people die every year in the U.S. due to a train accident.
Furthermore, another particular kind of vehicular accident is a bicycle accident, and it is one that is more common than anyone is inclined to think. In fact, the NHTSA reports that roughly 677 people died and about 38,000 were injured in bicycle crashes in 2011. However, since bicycle riders are not required to register their bicycles or get a license, the number of fatalities and injuries may actually be bigger. Additionally, about 90% of all bicycle injuries are never officially reported by police agencies. Because of this, the exact percentage of bicycle accidents, fatalities and injuries because of bicycle accidents will be difficult to determine.
Vehicular accidents, especially train and bicycle accidents, are quite difficult for the victims and their respective families. They can also be quite complicated. Thankfully, there are lawyers that specialize in train accidents/bicycle accidents, so if you are a victim of this kind of accident, or you know someone who is, or you lost a loved one because of this, then please never hesitate to ask for help from these lawyers.
