Dallas — Man Drowned While Kayaking on Lake Ray Hubbard

Posted on Monday, February 25th, 2019 at 12:02 am by Williams Hart

On Saturday, February 23, 2019, a man was killed after he drowned while kayaking on Lake Ray Hubbard with his friends.

According to initial reports, Linto Philip, 23, drifted into troubled waters, and as a result, his kayak capsized, and he went underwater. Dallas Police, Dallas Fire-Rescue, and the Texas Game Warden went to the scene later and recovered Philip’s body. He was brought to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to Linto Philip. Alas, he is not the only one whose life is taken away by a boating accident. Boating accidents like this are fairly common in the United States. In fact, the Coast Guard reported that in 2016, there were 4,463 boating-related accidents, with 701 people dead and 2,903 injured. The fatality rate of that year was 5.9 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational boats, an 11.3% increase from 2015’s fatality rate of 5.3 deaths per 100,000 registered recreational boats. Furthermore, the number of accidents in 2016 increased by 7.3%, the number of deaths by 12%, and the number of injuries by 11.1%, compared to the statistics in 2015.

80% of fatal boating accidents revealed that victims drowned, and of these victims, 83% were not wearing a life jacket. Other possible factors of boating accidents are alcohol, operator inattention, operator inexperience, improper lookout, excessive speed, and machinery failure.

The three types of boating vessel with the most number of deaths are motorboats (47%), kayaks (13%), and canoes (9%).

Boat-related accidents are quite difficult to the victims and their respective families. Thankfully, there are lawyers that specialize in boat-related accidents, so if you are a victim of this kind of accident, or you know someone who is, or you lost a loved one because of this, then please never hesitate to ask for help from these lawyers.
