On Saturday, February 2, 2019, a young boy was killed after a hit-and-run accident that occurred in the Love Field area of Dallas.
According to Dallas Police, at approximately 3:30 p.m., a black pickup was driving through a parking lot in the 2900 block of West Northwest Highway in front of Chicken-N-Rice when it struck the boy. The driver did not stop to render aid to the child and simply continued to travel toward Interstate 35. Detectives believe that the registered owner of the car, 24-year-old Ramon Garcia-Ruiz, was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.
The boy did not survive this accident.
It is unfortunate to hear of the passing of the young child. Alas, he is not the first victim whose life is taken away by a car accident. Car accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In a statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to roughly about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
A particular kind of vehicular accident that is quite common and deadly is a hit-and-run. According to a study done by roadside-assistance giant AAA, there were 2,049 hit-and-run deaths that occurred in 2016. This number is the highest annual total on record, and in the decade leading up to that number, 682,000 hit-and-run crashes happened each year.
Texas has been reported as the 8th worst state for hit-and-run fatalities. This is a fact that is appalling, and something must be done to change that.
