On the morning of Saturday, September 14, 2019, a man was killed in a drunken motorcycle accident that occurred in Corpus Christi, Texas.
According to initial reports, a 31-year-old man was driving an SUV along Golihar Road when in the 2500 block, he struck a motorcycle, driven by a 58-year-old Andrew Rojas, from behind. The impact of the collision caused the bike to go under the SUV, which then dragged the victim. The SUV then flipped and collided with a house.
Rojas was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the driver of the SUV was taken to an area hospital. He is now facing charges of intoxication manslaughter.
The crash still remains under investigation.
It is unfortunate to hear of the death of Andrew Rojas. Alas, there are countless other victims who suffered the same fate. Car accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
The three common causes of car accidents are speeding, driving while distracted, and DUI (driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol). DUI, in particular, is quite appalling. The NHTSA reports that about 28 people die every day because of drunken driving crashes, and in 2010, 10,228 died in DUI accidents while about 345,000 were injured. All these numbers paint a terrible picture indeed.
Furthermore, motorcycle accidents, a type of vehicular accident, are common despite the fact that motorcycles are initially believed to be far less crashworthy than closed vehicles. In 2016, the NHTSA reported that 5,286 people died in motorcycle accidents. In the same year as well, it is reported that motorcyclists were 28 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a crash per vehicle mile traveled.
Vehicular accidents, especially motorcycle and DUI accidents, are quite difficult for the victims and their respective families.
