Corpus Christi — Man Killed in Drowning Accident in Mustang Island Beach

Posted on Tuesday, July 16th, 2019 at 11:41 pm by Williams Hart

On Sunday, July 14, 2019, a man was pronounced dead after he drowned in a beach in Corpus Christi, Texas.

According to initial reports, Ramon Cortez III, 51, was visiting the Mustang Island Beach with his family and went for a swim. After a while, his family lost sight of him, and they called 911. First responders recovered Cortez and rushed him to Bay Area Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigation is still ongoing for this accident.

It is unfortunate to hear of the death of Ramon Cortez III. Alas, there are countless other victims who suffered the same fate. Drowning accidents like this are relatively common, not just in the United States but also all over the world. According to both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is a major public health problem all over the world. They reported that about 360,000 people died from drowning in 2015.

Even just in the U.S. alone, the statistics for drowning fatalities are alarming. From 2005-2014, it was reported that there were an average of 3,536 fatal unintentional drownings annually in the country. That is about ten deaths every day. Additionally, about 332 people died every year from drowning in boating-related accident, and about 1 in 5 people who die from drowning in the U.S. are children 14 years old and younger. And for every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency department care for nonfatal submersion injuries.

Moreover, statistics have shown that nearly 80% of people who die from drowning are male while children ages 1-4 have the highest drowning rates. The fatal unintentional drowning rate for African Americans was also significantly higher than that of Caucasians between 1999-2010.

Drowning accidents are quite difficult to the victims and their respective families.
