On Saturday, February 16, 2019, one man was dead after a deadly car crash that occurred on Ayers Street in Corpus Christi.
According to police reports, Wosbaldo Rios, 44, was driving his truck with two male passengers when he suddenly lost control and overturned several times, landing on an embankment near the J.C. Elliott landfill. One of the passengers, 32-year-old Rodolfo Trevino, died at the scene while the other passenger was brought to the hospital with critical injuries.
Investigators reported that Rios was speeding and intoxicated at the time of the crash. He was then charged for intoxicated manslaughter and assault with a vehicle.
It is unfortunate to hear of the death of Rodolfo Trevino. Alas, he is not the only one whose life is taken away by a car accident. Car accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In a statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
The three common causes of car accidents are speeding, driving while distracted, and DUI (driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol). DUI, in particular, is quite appalling. The NHTSA reports that about 28 people die every day because of drunk-driving crashes, and in 2010, 10,228 people died in DUI accidents while about 345,000 were injured. All these numbers paint a terrible picture indeed.
Moreover, another particular kind of vehicular accident that is considered to be one of the deadliest is a rollover. A 2010 statistics showed that rollovers comprised only 2.1% of nearly 9.1 million vehicular accidents, but they did account for well over 35% of all deaths. According to numerous studies, about 69% of the people who died from rollovers were not wearing any seatbelts at the time of the accident.
Car accidents, especially the DUI accidents and rollovers, are quite difficult to the victims and their respective families.
