Brownsville — 79-Year-Old Bicyclist Killed in Hit-And-Run Accident on Padre Island Highway

Posted on Tuesday, March 12th, 2019 at 11:23 pm by Williams Hart

At around 10:40 a.m. on Monday, March 11, 2019, a bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run accident that occurred on Padre Island Highway in Brownsville, Texas.

According to initial reports, Juan Luis Rodriguez, 34, was driving a white SUV along Padre Island Highway when at the 5700 block, he struck and killed Nicolas Garza Torres, 79. Rodriguez then promptly fled the scene, but witnesses were able to tell the police about his vehicle, and authorities managed to find and link the vehicle back to the suspect.

Rodriguez is now charged with accident involving death and criminally negligent homicide.

It is unfortunate to hear of the death of Nicolas Garza Torres. Sadly, he is not the only one whose life is taken away by a car accident. Car accidents are a problem in this day and age, and yet, they still continue to happen on a regular basis. In a statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.

A particular kind of vehicular accident that is quite common and deadly is a hit-and-run. According to a study done by roadside-assistance giant AAA, there were 2,049 hit-and-run deaths that occurred in 2016. This number is the highest annual total on record, and in the decade leading up to that number, 682,000 hit-and-run crashes happened each year.

Moreover, an accident involving a bicycle is another particular kind of vehicular accident, and it is one that is more common than anyone is inclined to think. In fact, the NHTSA reports that roughly 677 people died and about 38,000 were injured in bicycle crashes in 2011. However, since bicycle riders are not required to register their bicycles or get a license, the number of fatalities and injuries may actually be bigger. Additionally, about 90% of all bicycle injuries are never officially reported by police agencies. Because of this, the exact percentage of bicycle accidents, fatalities and injuries because of bicycle accidents will be difficult to determine.

Car accidents, especially those involving bicycles and hit-and-run, are quite difficult to the victims and their respective families.
