On Thursday, May 2, 2019, two children were injured after their vehicle crashed into a ditch in Waller County, Texas.
According to initial reports, Kemberly Pino, 24, was driving down FM 359, just south of FM 1887 near Brookshire, when she suddenly lost control and crashed her SUV into a ditch. Inside the vehicle were her 6-month-old, 2-year-old, and 5-year-old. After the crash, instead of calling for help, Pino unbuckled her children and went home.
However, another driver spotted the abandoned vehicle and called 911. Officers were able to track down Pino, and upon their arrival, they found that the 2-year-old and the 5-year-old had injuries so severe that at least one of them had to be flown to Texas Children’s Hospital in the Texas Medical Center.
This crash still remains under investigation. However, Pino has been charged with at least one count of causing negligent injury to a child.
It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to the children in this scenario. Alas, they are not the only ones who are affected by a car accident. Car accidents are a problem in this day and age, and yet they still continue to happen on a regular basis. In statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.
Moreover, statistics show that about 16% of these car accidents are crashes where the vehicle leaves the road. In this type of car crash, a car would usually collide into a lamppost, a tree, or a building, etc. Lamppost and tree collisions comprise about 31% of fatalities in this type of vehicular accident.
