Austin — Man Critically Injured After His Scooter Crashes into Vehicle on UT-West Campus

A man sustained critical injuries after his scooter collided with a vehicle on the West Campus of the University of Texas in Austin on Monday, April 1, 2019.

According to initial reports, a University of Texas student was riding in a scooter along the side of West 22nd Street. When he reached the intersection at San Antonio Street, a Jeep struck him, throwing him off the scooter. Neither the student nor the driver of the Jeep appeared to stop at the intersection even though there were stop signs.

The student sustained serious injuries, and he was brought to the hospital. As of right now, the accident is listed as a crash causing serious bodily injury. There has been no word yet as to the exact condition of the injured student.

It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to the unidentified student. Alas, he is not the only one whose life is affected by a vehicular accident. Car accidents like this are awfully common nowadays. In statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, someone dies from a car accident. This can be translated to be roughly about 6 million car accidents every year and about 37,000 people dying from them.

Additionally, accidents that involve electric scooters are slowly becoming more prominent nowadays. According to a recent study by Portland’s Bureau of Transportation, the e-scooter injury rate has been revealed to be 2.2 accidents per 10,000 miles — a number that is much higher than the national average for motorbikes (0.05 per 10,000 miles) and cars (0.1 per 10,000 miles). However, the study did note that not all of those incidents were related to rental e-scooters, so it is possible that the average is lower in reality.

That said, e-scooter accidents still happen, and they can be incredibly deadly. An investigation by Consumer Reports has revealed that there have been at least 1,545 accidents involving electric scooters that happened in the U.S. over the past year. And in Austin, Texas alone, 4 fatalities and 53 injuries have been reported since last May 2018.
